Medicare Options for Veterans

Medicare may work alongside VA health care and other military health benefits

Schedule a Review

Medicare and VA Health Care

If you receive health care through the VA or have other military health benefits, Medicare can come with some additional considerations.

VA health care and Medicare are separate health care systems. Having VA health care does not necessarily mean Medicare has no value. Medicare may provide access to doctors, hospitals, and other providers outside the VA health care system.

Your individual needs, current benefits, prescription coverage, and how you prefer to receive care can all play a role in deciding which Medicare options make sense.

Do Veterans Need Medicare Part B?

Veterans who use VA health care should carefully consider Medicare Part B before deciding to delay or decline enrollment. VA health care and Medicare are separate programs, and Medicare Part B can provide coverage for outpatient care from Medicare-participating providers outside the VA system.

VA health care coverage generally does not prevent a Medicare Part B late-enrollment penalty if you delay Part B and don't qualify for a Special Enrollment Period based on other coverage.

Understanding the enrollment rules before delaying Part B can help you avoid an unexpected gap in coverage or penalty later.

Medicare Advantage and VA Health Care

Some veterans choose to have both VA health care and a Medicare Advantage plan. Depending on the plan, this may provide additional access to doctors and hospitals outside the VA system.

Medicare Advantage plans vary by service area and can have different provider networks, costs, prescription coverage, and benefits. The right choice depends on how you expect to use both your VA and Medicare coverage.

VA Prescription Coverage and Medicare Part D

If you receive prescription medications through the VA, you may already have drug coverage that affects whether enrolling in a Medicare Part D plan makes sense.

Before adding or changing prescription coverage, consider where you receive your medications, the prescriptions you take, and any other coverage you have.

TRICARE for Life and Medicare

TRICARE for Life works differently from VA health care and has specific Medicare requirements. If you are eligible for TRICARE for Life, it's important to understand those requirements before making changes to your Medicare coverage.

Guidance From a Veteran-Owned Agency

Every veteran's health care situation is different. Some rely primarily on VA health care, while others want additional access to providers outside the VA system. Some may also have TRICARE for Life, employer coverage, or other benefits.

Payton Agency is a veteran-owned independent insurance agency. We can help you understand your Medicare insurance options and how they may fit alongside the coverage you already have.
