Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage Plans (MA-PD)

A Medicare Advantage Plan (also known as Medicare Part C) is a Medicare-approved health plan offered by private insurance companies that contract with Medicare to provide you with all your Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) benefits.

Medicare Advantage Plans include:

  • Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs)
  • Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs)
  • Private Fee-for-Service Plans (PFFS)
  • Special Needs Plans (SNPs)
  • Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans (MSAs)

When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan, your Medicare services are provided through the plan—not through Original Medicare. Most Medicare Advantage Plans also include prescription drug coverage (Part D).

What Do Medicare Advantage Plans Cover?

Medicare Advantage Plans must cover everything Original Medicare covers—except hospice care, which is still covered by Original Medicare. No matter which plan you choose, you’re always covered for emergency and urgent care.

Many Medicare Advantage Plans also offer additional benefits such as:

  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Dental
  • Wellness programs

Most plans also include prescription drug coverage (Part D). Along with your Part B premium, you typically pay an additional monthly premium for the Medicare Advantage Plan.

If you’re unsure whether a service will be covered, you can request a written advance coverage decision. Without this, you may be responsible for the full cost if the plan denies coverage.

Medicare Supplement

What is Medicare Supplement Insurance?

Medicare supplement (Medigap) insurance can help pay some of the health care costs that original Medicare does not cover, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

Some Medigap policies also offer coverage for services that Original Medicare doesn't cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S. If you have Original Medicare and you buy a Medigap policy, Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered health care costs. Then your Medicare supplement insurance policy pays its share.

A Medigap policy is different from a Medicare Advantage Plan. Those plans are ways to get Medicare benefits, while a Medigap policy only supplements your Original Medicare benefits.

Important Things to Know About Medicare Supplement Coverage

  • If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can apply for a Medigap policy, but make sure you can leave the Medicare Advantage Plan before your Medigap policy begins.
  • You pay the private insurance carrier a monthly premium for your Medigap policy in addition to the monthly Part B premium that you pay to Medicare.
  • A Medigap policy covers one person. If you and your spouse both want Medigap coverage, we'll work with you to setup two separate policies.
  • Any standardized Medigap policy is guaranteed renewable even if you have health problems. This means the insurance company can't cancel your Medigap policy as long as you pay the premium.

Prescription Coverage

What is Medicare Prescription Drug (Rx) Insurance?

Medicare Prescription Drug (Rx) Coverage—also known as Medicare Part D—helps cover the cost of prescription medications. This coverage is available to anyone with Medicare and is offered through private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Helps Lower Prescription Costs: Medicare Part D can reduce what you pay for medications, making prescriptions more affordable.

  • Covers a Wide Range of Medications: Each plan has a list of covered drugs (called a formulary), which includes both generic and brand-name medications.
  • Monthly Premium: You’ll pay a monthly premium for this coverage, which varies by plan.
  • Pharmacy Network: Plans often have preferred pharmacies where you can save even more.
  • Optional, But Important: While enrolling in Part D is optional, there may be a late enrollment penalty if you delay signing up.
